Who was Epicurus?
Epicurus was the Greek philosopher who founded Epicureanism. He defined philosophy as the art of making life happy, saying that pleasure is the highest and only good. Epicurus also advocated honesty, prudence, and justice in dealing with others.
Since the medieval ages, Epicurus has come to be associated with food and wine. In fact, the term epicure denotes someone with sensitive and discriminating tastes in food or wine. One enduring quote, which surely must have contributed to Epicurus' reputation as a gastronome, is:
"The beginning and the root
of all good is the pleasure of the stomach;
even wisdom and culture must
be referred to this."
